Dance Teacher Workshop

In the teaching workshop for dance teachers Alex will help them learn how to incorporate dancers in wheelchairs into their dance classes. There is no one method of working with someone in a wheelchair in dance class because each disability is unique to the individual dancer. Alex will help them learn methods for approaching and teaching a dancer in a wheelchair in a mainstream dance class they are either already teaching or a dance class specifically designed for disabled people. As long as the teacher has an open mind it can be easy.

Lecture/Demonstrations

Alex will perform a piece or show video and talk about his dance career. Following this there will be a question answer time with the audience. Programs are customized for various student levels, adults, dancers, re-habilitation therapy groups, nursing homes and physical therapy groups. This can last forty-five minutes to an hour.

Dance Class

One of SDC dancer's will teach a Modern, Ballet, or Contact Improvisation class. This class for all abilities could also be taught by teachers who were in a dance teacher workshop before this class. Alex works with them in adaptations with the dancer's who are disabled in the class.

Full Evening Concert

Spitzer Dance Company presents an evening of dance from its professional Modern Company. SDC would present four to six dances along Community Dance Events if in residency. The concert would be approximately one to one and a half hours.

Within a residency these community programs that can involve dancers and non-dancers can be added:

  • Community Dance- Camp Fire Stories Community Dance
    • SDC dancers will take community dancers and local people to choreograph and dance in a piece with some of the SDC dancers in the concert. The music for the piece would come from using local musicians.
  • "Honesty" Poetry Dance Improvisation
    • Some poems will be read in the concert and the dancers will do improvisation to the meaning of the poem. The subject will be "Honesty." SDC will have possibly two poems already and the rest could come from local youth and adults. SDC would prefer both.
